When Manasquan Bank named Kathie Adams to the newly created management position of Business Development Manager & Product Service Specialist; she figured she would be spending most of her time attracting new customers.
It turns out most of the business she is developing is relationship management services on behalf of Manasquan Bank’s loan customers. “One of my major roles is to educate our commercial loan customers on what we else we can do for them,” she says.
Adams, a 35 year banking veteran, often attends the loan closings to explain the Bank’s merchant services, escrow, money market and sweep accounts, overdraft checking, remote deposit capture and direct deposit. “Since many of our clients are not located close to a Manasquan branch, they appreciate an explanation of our auxiliary services and our electronic banking suite.”
Because Manasquan’s focus is on the small to medium business, Adams notes many of her clients are entrepreneurial business owners. “They really appreciate the personal service and hands-on approach,” she says. “You’re not getting that with a large bank.”
She mentions a young architect who broke out on his own. “I had met him through a networking function,” she says. “He brought his business over from a larger institution. We provided him with a line of credit and set him up with our online banking platform. Now he’s starting a second business and we’re repeating the process all over again.”
Kathie, who spent the first two decades of her career with regional and national banks, is convinced community banks are far more rewarding to work for. “You don’t get the one-on-one support from a national bank that you do at Manasquan Bank,” she says. “I know I’m helping local businesses succeed. That helps all of us who live here.”
Kathie is a life-long resident of Spring Lake Heights and is deeply involved in civic activities. She is a member of four area chambers of commerce and is the treasurer for two. She is a member of the Monmouth Ocean Development Council and the Spring Lake/Brielle Rotary. She also serves on the boards of the Meridian Community Alliance and The Academy of Finance for Manasquan High School.
“Manasquan is one of only two area high schools that have a discipline dedicated to finance,” she explains. In cooperation with the NJ Bankers Association, the bank also reaches into local elementary schools with a similar message. “We’ll speak to 3rd and 4th graders about how and why they should save and how banks work. We present the kids with a piggy bank with a gold dollar in each one. That gets the savings started.”
“Our hope is that they fill the piggy bank, then bring it into a branch where they can get their own savings passbook,” she says with a smile, noting that the kids love the passbooks.
“You won’t find passbooks at a national bank and they can’t give you the personalized assistance we give to each and every customer,” she concludes.
